Overview:

Soaring Dragon is a striking suspended light sculpture by artist duo McDermott & Baxter, commissioned by Willoughby Council for Chatswood’s Lunar New Year celebrations in 2024. Installed above the reflection pool at The Concourse, the work creates a dynamic interplay of light, glass, and water, symbolising the spirit and ascension of the dragon zodiac.

Event Engineering was engaged to deliver full structural services for this complex public artwork. Our team carried out a detailed feasibility assessment and engineering analysis before delivering final structural mark-ups, design certification, and a site inspection for sign-off.

The artwork itself features a gold anodized aluminium form with a perforated surface to resemble dragon scales, internally lit with programmable LED nodes. The double-skin structure creates a shimmering moiré effect, interacting with its environment in a way that evokes both sky and sea. Balancing elegance with structural integrity, Soaring Dragon exemplifies the seamless integration of art and engineering in urban public space.
