CONTINUUM

Mikala Dwyer

Client: Sydney Metro

Location: Sydney Metro Martin Place Station
2024

Role: Engineering design and certification of Möbius and Shelter of Hollows sculptures.

Overview: Part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest public art program, Continuum is a striking, site-specific installation at Central Station that responds to ideas of time, movement, and connection. Anchored by the Möbius sculpture—a looping, continuous form—this artwork transforms the pedestrian underpass into a contemplative, immersive space. Mikala Dwyer’s Continuum artwork is a series of sculptural elements located in both entrances at Martin Place Metro Station.

About the Artwork:
Created by artist Mikala Dwyer, Continuum draws on the Möbius strip as both symbol and structure—an infinite loop with no beginning or end. The sculpture is suspended within the new underground concourse, inviting commuters to reflect on the rhythms of travel, identity, and transformation

Our Involvement:
Event Engineering was engaged to deliver structural engineering and certification for the Möbius sculpture and the Shelter of Hollows sculpture. Our role included load assessments, structural modelling, installation guidance, and ensuring full compliance with safety and engineering standards within the highly constrained underground transit environment. Working closely with the design and delivery teams, we helped bring this dynamic, complex form to life—safely and seamlessly.

Project Impact: Continuum is a key part of Sydney Metro’s commitment to embedding public art in transport infrastructure. The Möbius sculpture is not just a visual marker; it’s a gesture of movement, continuity, and the shared flow of millions of daily journeys. We’re proud to have helped make it happen.
