THE CUSHION HOUSE

by Emotive for HOKA, constructed by MNR Constructions

Creative Agency: Emotive

Client: HOKA

Main Contractor: MNR Constructions

Engineering Subcontractor: Event Engineering

Location: North Bondi SLSC, Bondi Beach, NSW

Type: Temporary architectural activation

Completed: January 2025

Special Features: Inflated sole-like exterior; cyclone-rated; fast-track delivery; immersive brand experience

Overview: The Cushion House was a bold and immersive pop-up activation celebrating the launch of HOKA’s Bondi 9 running shoe. For four days in January 2025, the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club was transformed into a plush, sculptural experience—an architectural homage to HOKA’s signature maximalist cushioning.

About the Project: Designed by Emotive, the structure mimicked the soft sole of the Bondi 9, wrapping around the building in a dramatic, inflated form. The temporary installation featured a cyclone-rated build, reflective of the durability and comfort the shoe is known for. Inside, visitors could trial the shoe, attend movement and breathwork classes, and enjoy live DJ sets—all while immersed in HOKA’s design language.

Community Impact: The Cushion House created a memorable community touchpoint at Bondi Beach, offering an open invitation for runners and locals to connect with the brand through shared movement and wellness experiences. Its playful form quickly became a landmark for the weekend and drew attention both locally and online.

Our Involvement: Event Engineering was engaged by MNR Constructions to provide critical engineering services for this unique build. From structural review and load analysis to compliance and certification, we supported the realisation of this one-of-a-kind activation—ensuring it was not only visually impactful but safe and sound from the ground up.
